There’s something magical about listening to an audiobook performed by an absolute pro. The story spools seamlessly, each character speaking as though they are standing behind a screen, just out of sight.

It had been a while since I wrote and then revised and edited The Silversmith’s Puzzle. So as I knitted away, I gave myself up to this performance.

Yes, of course I know the story–I wrote it! But hearing it performed gave it so many more layers: nuances of intonation I had only imagined, the awful pauses, the painful moments, the joyous reconciliations! It bought back moments lost in time.

And it reminded me…why do we read historical fiction? People throughout time have had similar trials and tribulations. Human truths are clearer, seen through the lens of time. Mistakes hurt, selfishness cuts cruelly, and it takes deep commitment to achieve our goals. When every path seems closed, Captain Jim works on a seemingly unrelated job, hoping to earn the help of someone with influence. Only later will he learn that this unrelated task isn’t unrelated at all!

And so it is with us. Our family may need attention, or a non-profit, or a friend. Every seemingly unrelated task adds something to our understanding of human nature, if we pause to think deeply about it.

And that, ultimately is the job of a writer. And a human being.
